CGNA Update of 2006 Accomplishments

CGNA has been busy working with many members of our neighborhood to continue to ensure that our environment is a safe, clean and friendly one. For example, in concert with the first ward Alderman, Manny Flores, many lots are being considered for "down-zoning" to RS-3 from RT 4 and RT 5. The effect of this zoning action will be to keep the character of our neighborhood and discourage large, multi-unit dwellings that negatively impact parking, density and other quality of life factors.

Additionally, CGNA is actively involved in promoting community meetings so that all of our neighbors can weigh in on zoning change requests and new neighbors' proposals such as the American Bank building proposal on Ashland. At our March 2006 meeting CGNA honored 3 key neighborhood supporters for their tireless efforts in our area: Officer Owen Vasquez and Commander Robert Lopez from the 13th district, and Mr. Roy Gilcrease, Supervisor Department of Buildings. 1st Ward Alderman Manny Flores attended the meeting--along with many area law enforcement leaders and community activists. CGNA plans to make these awards an annual event and is welcoming nominations throughout the year.

CGNA was also actively involved in the new Dominick's groundbreaking in July of this year--attending the ceremony, as well as advising on how Dominick's can support the neighborhood in the future. Our president, Amanda Meyers addressed the crowd of over 50 well-wishers and challenged Dominick's management to become involved and active in our community.

In January of 2007, CGNA held it's quarterly general membership meeting and encouraged neighbors to get involved by either running for office or joining the board. Additionally, Amy Klein from Erie House spoke about the Erie House mission and opportunities for volunteering. Also, Leo Barron, from the Union Boys and Girls Club spoke about their new location at Talcott School and thanked CGNA for its donation. CGNA also made a donation to Erie house. Both institutions have been locations for regular CGNA meetings.
